Indiana head coach Curt Cignetti brought his usual confidence to Big Ten Media Days, praising Midwest programs for earning success rather than expecting it. He also took a swipe at the SEC, accusing the conference of “whining and complaining.” Surprisingly, ESPN analyst and longtime SEC advocate Paul Finebaum agreed with him.
Appearing on First Take, Finebaum said Cignetti was “100% correct” and described his comments as brilliant and well-delivered. He added that the SEC has been losing the public debate just as it has recently fallen short on the field, and noted that Cignetti had plenty of evidence to support his argument.
Finebaum’s reaction stood out because of his strong connection to the SEC. He is a Tennessee graduate, began his career covering Alabama football, and even wrote a bestselling book about SEC dominance. Because of those ties, his criticism is likely to be difficult for many SEC fans to accept.
He admitted that he had defended the conference for years but believes it is time to stop making constant claims about SEC superiority. Finebaum argued that comments such as Nick Saban’s recent defense of the SEC only make the league appear out of touch. He emphasized that the SEC remains an excellent football conference, but until it wins another national championship, the focus should be on proving it on the field rather than talking about it.
