How Robert Duvall, the Vietnam War, and a Yater Spoon Changed Surfing

The film Apocalypse Now is famous not just as a war movie, but also for its strong surfing theme. One of its most memorable characters, Lieutenant Colonel Bill Kilgore—played by Robert Duvall—is obsessed with surfing, even in the middle of combat.

Kilgore treasures his Renny Yater Spoon surfboard and is willing to launch military attacks just to surf good waves. His passion for surfing becomes one of the most iconic and unusual parts of the movie. Despite the chaos of war, he remains focused on finding perfect surf conditions, showing how deeply surfing defines his character.

The film’s creators paid close attention to surf culture, and Duvall even reportedly took surf lessons during filming. Over time, Kilgore’s character became legendary among surfers.

The movie was filmed partly in the Philippines, and some believe the production helped spark interest in surfing across Southeast Asia. Today, Kilgore remains one of Hollywood’s most unforgettable surf characters, leaving a lasting mark on both film and surf culture.
