With Drew Dalman stepping away, the team is now actively exploring new options, and one promising prospect, Sam Hecht, may be emerging as a strong candidate.
Hecht recently had a visit with the Bears, where he worked closely with offensive line coach Dan Roushar and assistant coach Kyle DeVan during drills. He spoke positively about the experience, noting that he appreciated the opportunity to interact directly with the coaching staff and build a connection with them. That interaction appears to have increased his interest in the team.
Given the current state of Chicago’s offensive line, the situation could be appealing for a young player like Hecht. The Bears are dealing with multiple setbacks, including Dalman’s departure and a significant knee injury to left tackle Ozzy Trapilo, which is expected to sideline him for most of the 2026 season. These losses have created an urgent need to rebuild and reinforce the line.
To address the gap at center in the short term, Chicago traded a fifth-round draft pick to acquire veteran Garrett Bradbury. However, this move does not necessarily block Hecht’s path. Instead, it could allow him time to develop while learning from an experienced player. Bradbury is entering the final year of his contract, which creates a natural opportunity for a transition if Hecht proves ready to step into a starting role in the future.
Hecht also expressed enthusiasm about the possibility of protecting quarterback Caleb Williams. He highlighted Williams’ playmaking ability as a major strength and said the chance to block for a quarterback of that caliber is exciting. Williams has already demonstrated his value to the team, coming off a strong second season in which he threw for 3,942 yards, recorded 27 touchdowns with only seven interceptions, and contributed additional yards and scores on the ground while leading the Bears to a playoff appearance.
As for Hecht’s own credentials, he finished his college career with 25 consecutive starts and delivered an impressive 2025 season. Over 792 offensive snaps, he did not allow a single sack or commit any penalties, showcasing remarkable consistency and discipline. Athletically, he also stands out, running a 5.10-second 40-yard dash with a 1.73-second 10-yard split, placing him in the upper tier among center prospects. These traits have positioned him as a likely Day 2 draft pick, with many projections placing him in the third round.
If the Bears are committed to building a strong foundation around Caleb Williams, investing in the offensive line is a logical step. A successful model already exists in how Kansas City strengthened its interior line to support its quarterback. With Hecht’s reliability and potential, Chicago may have an opportunity to secure a long-term solution at center and stabilize its offensive front for years to come.
