Chicago Bulls Coach Billy Donovan Emerges as Top Candidate for UNC Job Amid Heavy Speculation

Chicago Bulls head coach Billy Donovan has recently become a prominent name in discussions surrounding the vacant head coaching position at the University of North Carolina. This development comes shortly after the program parted ways with Hubert Davis, creating widespread speculation about Donovan’s potential return to the college basketball ranks.

Davis was fired on March 24, 2026, after North Carolina suffered a surprising early exit in the NCAA Tournament, losing in the first round to the VCU Rams. The defeat marked a disappointing end to his five-year tenure and prompted the university to begin an urgent and highly visible search for a new head coach to lead one of the sport’s most storied programs.

At 60 years old, Donovan brings extensive experience at both the collegiate and professional levels, which has made him an appealing candidate. Although he has not explicitly confirmed interest in the position, he has also not dismissed the possibility. When addressing reporters on March 25 ahead of a game in Philadelphia, Donovan acknowledged the growing rumors linking him to the job.

Despite the speculation, he emphasized that his immediate priority remains with the Bulls. He stated that his focus is firmly on his current roster and the ongoing 2025–26 NBA season. Donovan noted that while he is aware of the external discussions and understands that such speculation is inevitable in situations like this, his responsibility is to stay committed to his players and guide the team through the season.

  • This situation highlights the uncertainty often surrounding coaching careers, especially when high-profile college programs seek experienced leadership. Donovan’s successful history in college basketball, combined with his NBA experience, positions him as a strong candidate, but any potential move would likely depend on timing, team performance, and his long-term career goals. For now, he remains dedicated to coaching the Bulls while the rumors about his future continue to circulate.
