Jon Sumrall on Alert as Mario Cristobal Makes Early Move for No.1 IOL

The transfer portal window may be closed, but recruiting battles are still heating up as Jon Sumrall and Mario Cristobal compete for elite 2028 prospect George Selvie III.

Miami recently offered Selvie III, the nation’s No. 1-ranked interior offensive lineman in the 2028 class. The 6-foot-4, 260-pound standout from Sumner High School has already drawn interest from multiple major programs, including Florida, Louisville, Arizona, Wake Forest, Syracuse, and South Florida.

Selvie III carries notable football lineage. He is the son of former South Florida star George Selvie, who once delivered a dominant performance in a 17-7 upset at Doak Campbell Stadium. While South Florida might seem like a natural fit due to family ties, recruiting projections currently favor Florida, with Ohio State also strongly in contention.

Florida extended an offer last June under head coach Billy Napier. However, Miami’s late entry into the race adds significant competition. Selvie III recently expressed excitement about receiving the Hurricanes’ offer.

Primarily playing left offensive tackle and defensive tackle, Selvie III impressed in his freshman season, including a three-sack performance against Plant High School, a respected Tampa-area program. His skill set and early production have already generated major recruiting buzz.

The battle between Florida and Miami may come down to development and offensive line performance. Florida’s offensive line struggled in 2025, including a lackluster rushing output against Kentucky that raised concerns about consistency and scheme. For a top lineman prospect, those issues could be a red flag.

Miami, on the other hand, can point to stronger recent offensive line results. Protecting quarterback Carson Beck, the Hurricanes’ line ranked among the nation’s best and earned midseason recognition for the Joe Moore Award, which honors the top offensive line unit. Offensive line coach Alex Mirabal’s track record could be a key selling point.

As Miami intensifies its push, the recruiting showdown between the Gators and Hurricanes for Selvie III remains wide open, with development, coaching, and program trajectory likely to determine the outcome.
