Thierry Henry makes Micah Richards visibly emotional on CBS Sports after incredible speech

Thierry Henry left Micah Richards visibly emotional during a touching moment on CBS Sports’ coverage of the UEFA Champions League.

The broadcast followed a night in which FC Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Liverpool FC, and Atletico Madrid all advanced to the next stage of the competition. Meanwhile, Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur were knocked out.

The usual panel—Henry, Richards, and host Kate Scott—handled the coverage, with Jamie Carragher absent due to duties at Anfield. As the show began, Scott started introducing the panel, but Henry interrupted and jokingly asked if he could take over her role.

What followed turned into a heartfelt tribute. Henry praised Richards, calling him his favorite person on the show and commending his strength in dealing with the injuries that plagued the end of his playing career. The unexpected words clearly struck a chord, leaving Richards emotional, and the moment concluded with the two sharing a hug.

Richards then opened up about the challenges he faced during his career. He explained that despite maintaining a positive outlook, he struggled both mentally and emotionally while dealing with persistent injuries. His physical issues began early, with his first surgery coming in his late teens, and continued throughout his career. Ultimately, he played his final match at 29 and officially retired at 31.

He revealed that the turning point came when he had to drain fluid from his knee every few days. Doctors warned him that continuing could affect his ability to stay active later in life, even with his children. Despite ignoring that advice for a time due to his love for football, he eventually accepted that he had to step away from the game.

In a particularly candid moment, Richards admitted that during this difficult period, he turned to alcohol as a coping mechanism. He said it helped him mask the emotional toll of his situation, though it wasn’t a healthy solution. He credited a close friend with helping him reassess his life, encouraging him to focus on what truly matters—happiness, family, and meaningful relationships—rather than material success.

Reflecting on that period, Richards said it changed his perspective, making him realize there is more to life than the luxuries associated with being a professional footballer. Despite everything, he emphasized that he has remained a positive person and now strives to uplift others.
