Season Over”- Reds Fans Give Up After $53M Blow Triggers Havoc in Cincinnati Camp

For many supporters of the Cincinnati Reds, optimism for the upcoming season has quickly faded. The team is facing early uncertainty after their $53 million ace, Hunter Greene, revealed he will undergo an MRI on his pitching elbow.
Greene, now in the fourth year of his six-year deal with Cincinnati, is scheduled for imaging after experiencing elbow stiffness earlier this week. Manager Terry Francona confirmed the discomfort, noting it had lingered from the end of last season. Reports indicate the issue dates back to Greene’s final five to six starts of 2025, when he pitched through the discomfort. The stiffness resurfaced about a week before Spring Training.
Greene made his 2026 Spring Training debut against the Milwaukee Brewers, surrendering four runs in one inning. He walked one batter and did not record a strikeout.
Last season, however, Greene delivered standout numbers. He posted a 2.76 ERA with 132 strikeouts across 107.2 innings in 19 starts. Alongside Andrew Abbott and Nick Lodolo, he anchored a rotation in which all three starters finished with ERAs under 3.35. Abbott even earned an All-Star selection in 2025.
Looking ahead to 2026, Cincinnati’s projected rotation includes Abbott, Lodolo, Brady Singer, and Chase Burns, in addition to Greene. Former first-round pick Rhett Lowder is also in the mix.
Burns has drawn attention with a fastball reaching 99 mph and recorded 67 strikeouts in 43 1/3 innings. Lowder, who missed all of last season due to injury, impressed in 2024 and has looked sharp this spring. One analyst described the competition between Lowder and Burns for the final rotation spot as one of the most intriguing pitching battles in baseball this spring.
Singer also strengthened his case last season, leading the staff with 32 starts. He finished 14-12 with a 4.03 ERA and 163 strikeouts in 169 2/3 innings.
Regarding Greene’s elbow, he stated there is no UCL damage, offering some relief. However, when asked whether he would be ready for Opening Day, he admitted uncertainty, saying he was not sure.
Despite the concern, Cincinnati’s pitching depth could allow the team to be cautious with their ace if necessary.
The Reds are coming off a breakthrough year, earning their first playoff berth since 2013. However, their postseason run ended quickly when they were swept by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the Wild Card round. With ambitions of advancing further in 2026, Greene’s health now looms as a critical factor, especially given that he delivered the staff’s best numbers last season.
Francona confirmed that team physician Dr. Timothy Kremcheck will evaluate Greene, and the organization will also seek a second opinion from orthopedic surgeon Dr. Neal ElAttrache.
Fan reaction has been emotional and, in many cases, pessimistic. Some supporters have expressed fears that the season could be derailed before it begins. Others questioned Greene’s durability, pointing to his injury history.
Since debuting in 2022, Greene has dealt with several setbacks. He suffered a shoulder strain during his rookie season, missed two months in 2023 with right hip pain, and spent five weeks on the injured list in 2024 with a bruised elbow. Earlier in his career, he underwent Tommy John surgery in 2019.
Some fans have questioned why Greene waited before addressing the issue more aggressively. He explained that he received an injection during the offseason and initially felt fine.
Greene’s performance last year fueled high expectations. In September, he threw a one-hit shutout against the Chicago Cubs, completing his first career nine-inning game in a 1-0 victory. That win brought Cincinnati within two games of the New York Mets in the race for the final National League Wild Card spot.
Widely viewed as the team’s unquestioned ace, Greene had even generated early buzz as a potential National League Cy Young contender. Now, as he awaits MRI results, the franchise and its fans are left hoping the setback is minor and that their postseason aspirations remain intact.
