Raducanu apologised to Murray to avoid ‘bad blood’

Emma Raducanu has revealed she apologized to Andy Murray for withdrawing from their planned mixed doubles partnership at Wimbledon last year, seeking to ensure there were no lingering hard feelings between the two British tennis stars.

Murray had been set to team up with Raducanu during what would be his final Wimbledon appearance. However, Raducanu withdrew due to stiffness in her right wrist. As the draw had already been made, Murray was unable to find a replacement partner. This effectively ended his Wimbledon career, with his last match at the tournament being a men’s doubles loss alongside his brother Jamie.

Murray was reportedly “disappointed” by Raducanu’s decision. The situation drew additional attention when his mother, Judy Murray, responded to a social media post criticizing Raducanu’s withdrawal. While her initial reaction appeared critical, she later clarified it was meant to be sarcastic, suggesting scheduling concerns likely influenced Raducanu’s choice.

Addressing the incident after her second-round victory at the Australian Open, Raducanu shared that she reached out to Murray following Wimbledon. “Afterwards, I sent him a long message basically apologizing if I caused any trouble at Wimbledon. That’s definitely the last thing I want,” she explained. “He’s someone I’ve grown up looking up to, and I don’t want any bad blood or harsh feelings with him.”

According to Raducanu, Murray responded understandingly, despite his disappointment. “We’re fine now,” she added. “We walk past each other and say, ‘hello,’ ‘well done.’ It’s really cool seeing him with Novak [Djokovic] here as well.”

Since retiring after the 2024 Paris Olympics, Murray has taken on a new role as part of Djokovic’s coaching team.
