After Nelly Korda & Co’s Betrayal In 2022, Ex-LPGA Chief Makes Stunning Confession: ‘It’s a Complex Job’

The LPGA Tour had a remarkable finish to the 2024 season, marked by record viewership thanks to the involvement of notable athletes and stellar strokeplay. A key highlight was the inclusion of WNBA star Caitlin Clark in the Pro-am tournament at the Annika Driven by Gainbridge at Pelican, where she captivated the audience with her magnetic personality and strong social media presence.

Nelly Korda’s seven-title triumph and Jeeno Thitikul’s victory at the 2024 CME Group Tour Championship were among the season’s standout moments. Thitikul claimed the $4 million prize in a dramatic finish. These performances, along with the Tour’s increasing visibility, were propelled by former LPGA Tour commissioner Mollie Marcoux Samaan’s efforts. Under her leadership, the LPGA Tour saw a boost in TV ratings, retention of key sponsorships, and contract extensions, including with the CME Group for the season-ending event. However, Samaan acknowledged that the incoming commissioner would face significant challenges, particularly in securing additional sponsors to meet the Tour’s full potential.

In an interview with the Golf Channel, Samaan discussed the complexities of the commissioner role, emphasizing the travel demands and the need for expertise in both commercial and sporting aspects. She identified attracting more resources as a critical challenge, highlighting the need for new partnerships to fulfill the LPGA’s mission.

Samaan’s resignation on January 9, 2025, left the golfing world pondering the future of the Tour. She shared her belief that despite the difficulties, the LPGA would find a capable successor to continue its growth. Reflecting on past challenges, she recalled an incident in 2022 where key LPGA stars failed to attend a crucial event despite a massive prize pool, which raised questions about player commitment and put her in a difficult position with sponsors.

LPGA Tour stars, including Nelly Korda, expressed their expectations for the new commissioner. Korda emphasized the need for experience and the ability to attract attention and investment into the game. Mel Reid added that the new leader should possess a combination of business acumen, modern marketing skills, and personal qualities to tackle the challenges ahead. Lydia Ko also noted that the ideal commissioner must adapt to the Tour’s evolving circumstances, reflecting on the differences in expectations for each leadership transition.

The future of the LPGA Tour will largely depend on the next commissioner’s ability to navigate these challenges and build on the successes achieved during Mollie Marcoux Samaan’s tenure.
