The Fiji Airways Fiji Men’s 7s team has returned to camp following a short Christmas break, focusing on refining their defensive strategies and fitness as they gear up for upcoming tournaments. Head coach Osea Kolinisau acknowledged that the players were not at their best upon returning, highlighting the need to re-establish key processes before progressing to full-contact drills.
Defensive shape and communication are top priorities for the team as they work to fine-tune their performance. Kolinisau explained, “We were a little bit rusty coming back. I told the boys, some of you guys went and forgot a little of our processes. So Monday and today was all about getting our processes right. It wasn’t full-on contact—we just wanted to get our shape right in defence and understand the role each person plays in our line.”
Reflecting on the team’s performance at the Cape Town 7s, Kolinisau noted the breakdown in communication and spacing during the final moments of a match, which was attributed to fatigue. The team is now concentrating on ensuring their defensive structures hold strong even when exhaustion sets in.
The Fiji Men’s 7s team will take part in next weekend’s Coral Coast 7s before heading to Australia for the Perth 7s on the 20th of January. The team’s continued focus on defense and fitness will be crucial for their success in these upcoming competitions.
