The Georgia Bulldogs experienced a disappointing conclusion to their 2024 season, falling to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in the Sugar Bowl during the second round of the College Football Playoff. Although the defense faced struggles throughout the year, much of the criticism from fans focused on the offense.
Returning quarterback Carson Beck and offensive coordinator Mike Bobo led an offense that ranked fifth nationally in total yards in 2023 but dropped to 32nd in 2024. Contributing factors included injuries to key running backs and departures of wide receivers during the offseason. This decline has led to frustration among fans, many of whom expressed dissatisfaction with Bobo on social media.
The Bulldogs have now gone two seasons without a National Championship, an expectation that has become standard under head coach Kirby Smart. With back-to-back seasons falling short of those expectations, discussions about potential changes at the offensive coordinator position have intensified.
If Bobo is replaced, several candidates are being considered:
1. Todd Monken:
Monken previously served as Georgia’s offensive coordinator from 2020 to 2022, overseeing the team during its back-to-back National Championships. His offenses were ranked first nationally in his final two seasons, and his creative play-calling left a lasting impression on the fan base. Currently with the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFL, Monken’s potential return to Georgia could hinge on his experience with locker room tensions in the NFL, such as reported friction among the Eagles’ players. This could make a return to the college ranks appealing..
2. Joe Brady:
Brady gained recognition as the wide receiver coach and passing game coordinator for the 2019 LSU Tigers, a team that featured standout players like Joe Burrow, Ja’Marr Chase, and Justin Jefferson. After moving to the NFL, Brady thrived in his role as the offensive coordinator for the Buffalo Bills, where he led a top-tier offense. If he is not named an NFL head coach in 2025, Kirby Smart could make a strong case for him to join the Bulldogs.
3. Buster Faulkner:
Faulkner, currently the offensive coordinator for Georgia Tech, has been credited with revitalizing their offense. Notably, his team pushed the Bulldogs to an eight-overtime battle this season. Faulkner also has ties to Georgia, having served as the Bulldogs’ quarterback coach from 2020 to 2022. His familiarity with Kirby Smart’s system and his proven ability to compete at an elite level make him a strong contender. Additionally, his past connection with Smart during their time at Valdosta State strengthens his case.
While Monken may be a longshot due to his current NFL success, Faulkner is considered a leading candidate given his close relationship with Smart and demonstrated success at both Georgia and Georgia Tech.
