4-Star Michigan Commit Voices Reaction as USF Transfer Tawfiq Byard Chooses Deion Sanders Over Alex Golesh

Deion Sanders, head coach of the Colorado Buffaloes, continues to make waves in college football with his stellar recruiting tactics. Recently, Sanders secured Tawfiq Byard, a standout sophomore safety from the University of South Florida (USF), reinforcing Colorado’s reputation as a prime destination for top-tier talent. This move comes amidst ongoing recruiting drama, with a playful reaction from a former target, 4-star linebacker Nathaniel Owusu-Boateng (NOB), stirring the pot.

Owusu-Boateng, who committed to the Michigan Wolverines earlier in the recruiting cycle, reacted to Byard’s announcement with a pair of fire emojis on social media, leaving fans guessing about his intentions. Was it admiration or playful rivalry? Either way, it highlighted the fierce competition between programs like Colorado and Michigan. While NOB is a crucial addition for Michigan’s rebuilding efforts under Sherrone Moore, Byard’s decision to join the Buffaloes is seen as a major win for Sanders.

Byard’s choice to leave USF was fueled by his ambition to chase championships. The 6-foot-1, 195-pound safety, a DeMatha Catholic High School transfer and younger brother of Chicago Bears safety Kevin Byard, had an impressive 2024 season with 54 tackles, eight tackles for loss, two sacks, and an interception. His versatility and pedigree made him one of the most sought-after players in the transfer portal.

Byard’s visit to Colorado solidified his decision, with Coach Sanders and defensive coordinator Rob Livingston playing pivotal roles. Byard praised Livingston’s NFL background and ability to connect with players, saying, “We speak the same language. He’s coached a lot of great safeties.” Byard also emphasized the warmth and hospitality of the Colorado staff, describing how the program’s culture made him feel welcomed and valued.

This addition strengthens Colorado’s already solid defensive unit, which showed potential during the 2024 season despite some inconsistencies. Byard’s three remaining years of eligibility provide Sanders and his team ample time to develop him into a cornerstone of their defense.

Meanwhile, Michigan celebrates the acquisition of NOB, one of the top defensive prospects in the 2025 class. His commitment marks a significant win for the Wolverines, especially after a challenging 6-6 season. However, his lighthearted social media jab underscores that recruiting battles extend beyond the signing day.

Colorado’s 2025 transfer class, currently ranked 14th nationally by 247Sports, is gaining momentum with Byard’s addition. As the Buffaloes and Wolverines each secure elite recruits—a safety for Colorado and a linebacker for Michigan—the stage is set for further rivalry in the recruiting arena. Coach Prime’s strategy continues to reshape the landscape of college football, leaving fans eager to see who’s next in this recruiting chess game.
