Springboks forward Nicolaas Janse van Rensburg is preparing to return to South Africa after requesting an early release from his contract with French club Montpellier. The versatile back-five forward, who joined the team in 2016, has played over 150 matches for the club, achieving both Challenge Cup and Top 14 successes during his tenure. Known for his lineout expertise, he has often featured as a flanker but is equally adept at playing in the second row.
The 30-year-old earned his sole Springboks cap in 2021, debuting against Argentina. Despite being called up for the 2024 Rugby Championship, he did not add to his international appearances, with Ruan Nortje preferred in his position. Janse van Rensburg was also not included in the squad for the Autumn Nations Series, but a return to South Africa could improve his chances of future selection. Reports suggest he requested the early release for personal reasons, and Montpellier has agreed to his departure, recognizing his contributions over the years.
This season, Janse van Rensburg has started all seven of his matches for Montpellier, splitting time between flanker and lock positions. Montpellier appears prepared for his exit, with several capable players, including Lenni Nouchi and Billy Vunipola, available to fill his role.
Although it remains unclear which South African team he will join, the Bulls are the likely destination given his roots in Pretoria. Janse van Rensburg previously represented the Bulls at youth level and played for them in the Currie Cup and Super Rugby before moving to Montpellier under then-coach Jake White.
Janse van Rensburg is not the only Springbok linked with a return to South Africa. The Bulls are reportedly in talks with Jan Serfontein, while Cobus Reinach has been rumored to join the Stormers.
