Joao Fonseca expressed heartfelt gratitude to Rafael Nadal for attending the Next Gen ATP Finals final in Jeddah on Sunday, December 22. The 18-year-old Brazilian claimed the title with a victory over Learner Tien, becoming the second-youngest champion in the tournament’s history, following Jannik Sinner’s win five years ago.
During his post-match interview, Fonseca acknowledged the significance of Nadal’s presence, describing it as an honor to play in front of the tennis legend. He reflected on the inspiration Nadal provides to younger players:
“I want to thank Rafa for being here… he’s such a legend of this sport. It’s meaningful for us players to be in those big stadiums with those guys watching,” Fonseca said.
When asked about joining the ranks of former Next Gen champions like Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz, Fonseca shared his aspirations:
“It’s amazing. Making good results like those guys… hopefully, in the future, I can be like them.”
Fonseca’s Journey to the Title
Fonseca showcased remarkable form throughout the tournament. He secured wins over Arthur Fils, Learner Tien, and Jakub Mensik in the group stage. In the semifinals, he defeated Luca Van Assche and later triumphed in a rematch against Tien in the final with a 2-4, 4-3(8), 4-0, 4-2 victory.

“I met Rafa today, so I’m a bit inspired by him,” Fonseca said, adding that Nadal’s advice on hard work and mental toughness left a profound impact.
“He said a little bit more about his experience, which is a lot, and his mentality. The way he had that—he’s a hard worker—so it’s really nice and really inspired me today.”
