Everyone Had the Same Question on Ohio State’s Will Howard After Heisman Announcement

Kyle McCord, Syracuse’s quarterback, made headlines by securing a spot in the Top 10 of the Heisman Trophy voting for the 2024 college football season. McCord threw for a nation-leading 4,326 yards, completing 367 of 558 pass attempts. His performance included 29 touchdowns and 12 interceptions, earning him the 10th spot in the Heisman voting, specifically in the range of players ranked sixth through tenth.

This accomplishment came after a tumultuous 2023 season with Ohio State, where McCord amassed 3,170 yards, 24 touchdowns, and six interceptions in 12 games. Despite leading the team to an 11-1 record, his inability to beat Michigan, the eventual national champions, defined his tenure. In that pivotal game, McCord threw two interceptions alongside two touchdowns, a performance that drew criticism from Ohio State’s head coach Ryan Day and fans alike. Following the backlash, McCord transferred to Syracuse, where he thrived and showcased his talent during the 2024 season.

Ohio State replaced McCord by signing Will Howard from Kansas State. However, Howard’s performance fell short of expectations. He threw for 2,860 yards with 28 touchdowns and seven interceptions but suffered crucial losses to Oregon and Michigan. The loss to Michigan was especially damaging, as Howard managed only 10 points and threw two interceptions in “The Game,” which ultimately cost Ohio State a spot in the Big Ten Championship and a high seed in the College Football Playoff.

McCord’s resurgence at Syracuse and his Heisman recognition prompted Ohio State fans to criticize both the program and Howard. Despite Ohio State’s struggles, the new 12-team College Football Playoff format offers the Buckeyes a shot at redemption. Meanwhile, Syracuse, under McCord’s leadership, finished the season with a 9-3 record and will face Washington State in the Holiday Bowl on December 27.
