The transfer portal in college football is heating up, with some of the top players finding new teams. Houston is one of the teams actively seeking to strengthen its roster, particularly at quarterback, as they aim to make a push towards the College Football Playoff in 2025.
After a challenging season in the Big 12, Houston sought a new quarterback to compete in a high-powered conference. On Wednesday night, the Cougars landed former Texas A&M quarterback Conner Weigman, who has committed to Houston for the 2025 season, according to Hayes Fawcett of On3 Sports.
Weigman was a highly touted recruit coming out of high school when he chose Texas A&M. Projected as one of the top quarterbacks for the 2024 season, his development was hampered by injuries and inconsistent performances, leading to a mid-season benching in favor of Marcel Reed. Over his three seasons at Texas A&M, Weigman completed 60% of his passes for 2,694 yards and 19 touchdowns to seven interceptions. He also contributed as a runner, gaining 261 yards and scoring two touchdowns on the ground.
The Cypress, Texas native entered the 2024 season with NFL Draft aspirations, even being mentioned as a potential first-round pick in some mock drafts. Standing at a good size with a strong arm and the athleticism to be a dual-threat quarterback, Weigman has the physical tools to develop into an NFL prospect. However, his stock fell after some inconsistent performances this season, and he now looks to rebuild it at Houston.
Weigman is an upgrade over the quarterbacks the Cougars used in 2024, as both Donovan Smith and Zeon Chriss struggled to find success under center. Houston’s offense sputtered throughout the season, scoring just 168 points in 12 games—by far the worst mark in the Big 12—resulting in a 4-8 record. With Weigman leading the offense, those statistics are expected to improve significantly next season.
