Phil Foden has faced backlash from rival fans after a social media post following Manchester City’s 2-0 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield last weekend. The loss marked City’s fourth consecutive Premier League defeat, with goals from Cody Gakpo and Mohamed Salah sealing Liverpool’s victory.
Amid the team’s struggles, including an open letter to fans from Kyle Walker, Foden has come under scrutiny for his underwhelming performances this season. Despite scoring 19 league goals last season and winning the PFA Players’ Player of the Year award, the midfielder has yet to score in the league this campaign.
In response to criticism, Foden reposted an image of himself holding the PFA award on Instagram. However, the move sparked mixed reactions online. While some fans accused him of being “shameless” and clinging to past achievements, others defended his right to celebrate his accolades.
Critics questioned his form, with one user commenting, “Good… Now start playing like the person who won that,” and another saying, “Flexing past glory… where is shame.” Others supported him, arguing that celebrating past success is justified.
Foden, who has scored three goals in all competitions this season, finds himself and his team struggling in fifth place, 11 points behind league leaders Liverpool.
