In the African Rainbow Community Gold Cup Round of 16, College Rovers, Helderberg, and Northam Rhinos secured dominant victories and are set to host quarter-final matches this weekend. The games will take place in Durban, Strand, Setaria, and Pretoria.
Last year’s runners-up, College Rovers, claimed a commanding 70-32 victory over Safcol United in Durban on Sunday. The team pulled away in the second half, with flyhalf Inny Radebe contributing 25 points and wing Onke Jibe adding two of their ten tries. They will now face Louis Trichardt in the quarter-finals. Louis Trichardt advanced to the last eight with a 29-19 win over Sasol Secunda, largely due to centre Rasenda Kubayi’s hat-trick.
Helderberg cruised to a 38-0 win over Kimberley in Strand last Saturday, securing their place in the quarter-finals. Scrumhalf Michael Visser finished with 18 points, scoring two tries and adding four conversions. Helderberg will now host Centurion, who defeated Springs 59-34. Centurion’s Gaybrin Smith, the tournament’s leading point scorer, contributed 14 points, bringing his total to 45.
The Northam Rhinos triumphed 55-19 over Pirates in Setaria, with leading try-scorer Elzandro Fredericks extending his tally from four to seven tries. Rhinos will now meet Groot-Brakrivier, who edged out Capital Legacy Crusaders 21-15 in their Round of 16 clash in Durban.
In another tight match, the Northam Wolves fought hard for a 48-40 victory over Tuine in Hartebeespoort. Despite leading 35-12 at halftime, Wolves had to fend off a strong comeback by Tuine, whose flyhalf Rodwill Baatjies scored 25 points. Wolves’ victory sets them up to face defending champions Naka Bulle, who advanced after their prospective opponents, Hamilton’s and Gardens, were disqualified for fielding ineligible players. Naka Bulle previously won 107-0 against Sishen.
All four quarter-final matches are scheduled for Saturday afternoon. The game from Durban will be streamed live on the SuperSport Schools app and website.
