Horrible Decision”: Heartbroken Diamondbacks Owner Claims Signing Jordan Montgomery Was His “Biggest Mistake”

The Arizona Diamondbacks made a big push after their thrilling 2023 World Series run, aggressively seeking upgrades in the offseason. Among the notable additions was pitcher Jordan Montgomery.

However, his performance in the 2024 season fell short of expectations. D-backs owner Ken Kendrick described Montgomery’s season as a major disappointment, calling the decision to sign him a “swing and a miss.”

While the team’s offensive additions like Joc Pederson, Eugenio Suárez, and Randal Grichuk paid off, Montgomery struggled throughout the season, finishing with the worst ERA in MLB among pitchers with over 100 innings, at 6.23.

Despite high hopes following Montgomery’s World Series heroics with the Texas Rangers, his 2024 campaign was marred by poor performances, resulting in a demotion to the bullpen in August. Kendrick took responsibility for pushing the signing, admitting it was not part of their original game plan and labeling it as the team’s biggest mistake in terms of talent acquisition.

Montgomery, who signed a one-year $25 million deal with a $22.5 million player option for the following season, may still have a future with the team, but the Diamondbacks are likely considering their options, including the possibility of trading him.
