One light-hearted issue, however, came from a nickname clash between Isaiah Hartenstein and Isaiah Joe. The two resolved it in a meeting, with Hartenstein now going by “I-Hart.”
More importantly, there is debate about who should start between Hartenstein and Chet Holmgren. Some analysts, like Tim McMahon, suggest that the Thunder might adopt a flexible approach similar to Steve Kerr’s strategy with Team USA, adjusting lineups based on matchups. Holmgren, a versatile player who shoots well from outside, might even shift to the power forward position, while Hartenstein could take center duties. McMahon sees Holmgren’s ability to space the floor and handle the ball as essential, making a dual-center lineup viable.
During the Thunder’s recent playoff loss to the Dallas Mavericks, they struggled with second-chance points and rebounding, a gap Hartenstein can help fill. Known for his rebounding prowess, Hartenstein could complement Holmgren’s skills, potentially fixing one of the team’s biggest weaknesses from last season.
While both big men bring unique skills, Hartenstein’s willingness to adapt and develop new facets of his game, such as a three-point shot, mirrors his earlier growth under Knicks coach Tom Thibodeau. With the team’s flexibility and depth, head coach Mark Daigneault is well-positioned to experiment with lineups, making the Thunder a potential title contender this season.
