‘Damn Joke’: Fans Unhappy With Team U.S.A’s Presidents Cup Moment Ft. Justin Trudeau & the Trophy Ceremony

Team USA secured its 10th consecutive victory on Sunday at the Royal Montreal. Xander Schauffele led the charge with four straight birdies, setting the pace for the American team. Sam Burns wrapped up a remarkable week, capping off the team’s triumph. Meanwhile, Russell Henley celebrated a successful debut with a win, and 2025 Ryder Cup U.S. Captain Keegan Bradley secured a crucial point when Si Woo Kim missed a 10-foot putt on the final hole. Reflecting on his performance, Bradley, who returned to the Presidents Cup U.S. team after five years, commented, “The last time I played, I was the point to lose the Ryder Cup. If this is my last round as a player — maybe it is — I’m happy with that.”

American captain Jim Furyk praised all twelve players, expressing his satisfaction with their performance. He remarked, “It was a really good group of 12, an easy bunch. I had great leadership at the top. They made the captain’s job easy, and these guys played their hearts out this week. They played well on the back nine.” The prize-giving ceremony was made memorable by a special guest, as is tradition in the team event.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was invited to present the Presidents Cup trophy to Jim Furyk. A photo shared by NUCLR Golf on their X account showed Trudeau handing the trophy to the U.S. captain, with the caption, “#NEW: Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau awards the #PresidentsCup trophy to U.S. captain Jim Furyk.”

However, the golf community did not seem to welcome Trudeau’s involvement. Some fans were less than pleased with the Prime Minister’s presence and the post by NUCLR Golf, expressing their disapproval on social media.

Criticism quickly surfaced, with several individuals calling the prize-giving ceremony “lame.” Many Canadians are still discontent with Trudeau’s controversial actions, despite his public apologies. Some fans went as far as to joke that Furyk should sanitize the trophy, referencing Trudeau’s handling of it. Comments like, “I hope he sprays it with Lysol” and “Jim gonna need some hand sanitizer after that meeting” circulated online.

Given that the Presidents Cup took place in Quebec this year, where many Canadians played for the International team, the crowd at the Royal Montreal had a strong Canadian presence. One online commenter wondered if Trudeau had been booed when he appeared at the event, reflecting the mixed sentiment.

Team USA, led by Furyk, faced various challenges from the International team, including accusations of poor sportsmanship. Adding to the drama, the trophy presentation by a controversial figure further soured the moment for some. One fan wrote, “On behalf of all Canadians I apologize to Jim Furyk for that experience.”

Another fan felt that Trudeau’s presence overshadowed the closing ceremony, calling it “the most lame closing ceremony I’ve ever seen,” while others simply dismissed the event as “a damn joke.”

The debate over Trudeau’s role in the ceremony left fans divided, but Team USA’s dominant performance in the Presidents Cup remained a highlight of the event.
