After Confronting Simone Biles Head On, Rebeca Andrade Pens Emotional Note on Unsure Gymnastics Future: “Everything Would End”

In August 2024, during the women’s artistic gymnastics floor finals at the Paris Olympics, Rebeca Andrade came incredibly close to winning gold, narrowly defeating Simone Biles. After her performance, Simone, visibly anxious, was heard saying, “I think Rebeca got that one,” and expressed her worry, acknowledging Andrade’s strong routine. Rebeca scored 14.166, edging out Simone’s 14.333, bringing her total Olympic medal count to six. This victory was particularly significant because it was the first time Rebeca defeated Simone while both were competing at the same event, unlike in previous competitions, such as the Tokyo Olympics or the 2023 World Championships.

Just two months earlier, Rebeca was uncertain about her future in gymnastics. In March 2024, she penned a farewell letter, convinced that the Paris Olympics would be her last. Struggling with criticism and doubts, Rebeca considered leaving the sport. However, support from her family and others helped her regain confidence. Reflecting on her journey, she shared that it wasn’t just talent that brought her success, but overcoming her struggles.

Rebeca’s achievements have inspired a new generation of gymnasts in Brazil, a country where financial barriers often hinder talented athletes. Growing up in a favela and training through programs for low-income families, her story represents resilience. Gymnastics coach Georgette Vidor praised Rebeca’s success, highlighting the challenges faced by Brazilian gymnasts.

Despite contemplating retirement, Rebeca now sees a future in gymnastics. Her close bond with Simone Biles, both competitors and supporters of each other, is notable. They have formed a unique friendship that transcends rivalry, often cheering each other on and celebrating together. After Rebeca’s win, their sportsmanship and camaraderie were on full display as Rebeca rushed to hug Simone.

Their relationship has set a refreshing tone in gymnastics, where competition often fosters tension. Both athletes have supported each other through challenging times, including Biles’ encouragement of Rebeca during her injury recovery in 2018. Their mutual respect was also seen at the Paris Olympics when they shared the podium in a historic moment as the first all-Black podium in Olympic gymnastics history.
