Engaged in Successive Legal Battles, Conor McGregor’s UFC Future Gets Michael Chandler’s Push for 2025 Return

Conor McGregor’s return to the Octagon has hit another roadblock due to his ongoing legal issues. The long-discussed fight between McGregor and Michael Chandler, which was first teased during The Ultimate Fighter 31 (TUF 31) where both served as rival coaches, has yet to materialize. Three years after the initial hype, the fight now appears to be further delayed. The MMA community is left wondering if and when this highly anticipated bout will finally happen.

Michael Chandler, McGregor’s likely opponent upon his return, recently shared his thoughts on the situation during an appearance on The MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani. Chandler expressed understanding for McGregor’s predicament but emphasized the importance of keeping momentum and staying prepared. He acknowledged that McGregor’s legal troubles have created a difficult situation, saying, “It’s a tough position. It’s a horrible position all around… The best thing he can do is get back to training and work toward a common goal.”

Chandler himself remains optimistic and ready to move forward with preparations for the fight. He shared that he plans to begin training camp soon after the new year, expressing a desire to fight McGregor as early as mid-2025, possibly during International Fight Week. “Why not fight me?” Chandler remarked, showing his eagerness to step back into the Octagon for what could be one of the biggest fights of his career.

As for McGregor, the Irish superstar has hinted at his readiness to return, posting on social media about his training sessions and expressing his intent to fight twice in 2025. However, his focus has also shifted to resolving his legal challenges. McGregor was recently found liable in a civil case brought by Nikita Hand, and although the court’s decision awarded only modest damages for assault rather than aggravated or exemplary damages, McGregor announced plans to appeal. He stated that the decision was “not final” and maintained his commitment to clearing his name.

Despite the legal hurdles, it is widely believed that the UFC will not sever ties with McGregor, given his immense star power and financial draw. However, if his appeal is unsuccessful, his comeback could face further delays, potentially pushing his return even further into the future.

While fans remain hopeful for McGregor’s return and his long-awaited fight with Chandler, the situation remains uncertain. Both fighters are determined to make the bout happen, but McGregor’s ability to navigate his legal troubles will likely determine the timeline for his comeback.

What do you think? Will McGregor overcome these obstacles and fight Chandler in 2025, or will his legal issues continue to derail his UFC career? Share your perspective.
