Garry Birtles tells £25m Nottingham Forest star he should have declined international call-up

Nottingham Forest saw several of their players travel internationally for national team duties recently, with mixed results for the squad. Some players had memorable outings, while others had less impactful experiences.

Chris Wood, the Forest striker, had a standout moment, scoring a hat-trick against Samoa. His performance earned him a nickname from a New Zealand commentator, highlighting his success on the international stage.

Murillo also drew attention, gaining praise from teammate Morgan Gibbs-White for earning a call-up to Brazil’s national team. Despite this achievement, he did not play in Brazil’s matches against Venezuela and Uruguay.

Gibbs-White himself enjoyed another call-up to the England squad and made an appearance in the match against Greece in Athens. However, his participation sparked some debate, as it meant missing Nottingham Forest’s crucial trip to Arsenal. The question arose as to whether he should have declined the England call-up due to fitness concerns, particularly related to an ankle issue.

Former England international Garry Birtles expressed his views, suggesting Gibbs-White might have been better off skipping the national duty to focus on his recovery. Speaking on the Forest Focus podcast, Birtles remarked that players should be at peak fitness when representing their country to avoid exacerbating injuries and potentially jeopardizing club performances. He noted Gibbs-White’s strong performances as a substitute for England but questioned the wisdom of playing while not fully fit.

Contrary to Birtles’ view, it was argued that no player should reject the opportunity to represent their country. Gibbs-White’s decision to join the England squad was seen as a chance for him to solidify his position at the international level. It was also suggested that his ankle might not have been as much of an issue during the England fixtures as it was later, ahead of Forest’s match against Arsenal.

Forest’s management, led by Nuno Espirito Santo, is optimistic about Gibbs-White’s fitness. They hope he will recover in time for the team’s upcoming home game against Ipswich.

This international break has sparked broader discussions about the balance between club and country commitments, particularly when injuries come into play. Nottingham Forest fans and pundits alike are watching to see how Gibbs-White and other key players perform as they return to club action.
