Tiger Woods’ ex-coach Hank Haney applauds golfer’s smart way around a “stupid rule”

Tiger Woods’ former swing coach, Hank Haney, recently shared his opinion on X (formerly Twitter) about the debate over whether golfers should be required to wear collared shirts on the course. His comment was in response to a viral post from Lou Stagner, a performance coach and Titleist Ambassador, who has a large following on the platform.

In his post, Stagner recounted a story about a golf buddy who wears only a t-shirt under a snug-fitting hoodie while playing golf. According to the friend, the hoodie fits tightly around the neck, making it difficult to tell what kind of shirt he’s wearing underneath. He argued that since it’s not visible, it shouldn’t matter whether or not it’s a collared shirt. Stagner asked his followers for their thoughts on the situation.

Haney quoted the post and applauded the friend’s approach, calling it a smart move to bypass what he described as an outdated and unnecessary rule. This shows Haney’s disapproval of the traditional dress codes, particularly those enforced at private golf clubs that still mandate collared shirts.

Beyond his views on golf attire, Haney has also been vocal about current political issues. Since coaching Woods from 2004 to 2010—a period during which Woods won six major championships—Haney has used X to express support for former President Donald Trump, endorsing him in both the 2020 and 2024 elections.

Since Trump returned to office in January 2025, Haney has continued to show support for members of the administration, including Elon Musk, who now heads the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). On April 10, Haney responded to a DOGE post highlighting suspected unemployment insurance fraud from 2020. He criticized the lack of public concern over the issue, calling it “insane.”

Haney has also reposted a video of entrepreneur Kevin O’Leary endorsing Trump’s trade policies with China and calling for even stricter tariffs. On April 3, he shared a video showing vandalism to a Tesla vehicle, highlighting the brand’s security features. Haney has indicated interest in buying a Tesla himself.
