Kalen DeBoer Confirms Stance on Austin Mack After Alabama HC Announces Ryan William Injury Update

After a turbulent season marked by Jalen Milroe’s 11 interceptions and a 9-4 record, Alabama is in search of a quarterback who can confidently lead the offense. New head coach Kalen DeBoer has been evaluating his options closely, focusing on Ty Simpson, Austin Mack, and Keelon Russell. As spring practices unfolded and competition intensified, offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb publicly backed Simpson, while DeBoer kept his thoughts on Mack more reserved. This shift signaled that the quarterback competition wasn’t over—it had simply taken a new direction.

The conclusion of the spring game raised a pressing question: Who will be the starting quarterback for Alabama this season? Ryan Grubb gave a strong indication by stating, “If there was a game tomorrow, Ty Simpson would start.” He emphasized that although the competition isn’t finished, the confidence in Simpson suggests there’s a clear gap between him and the other contenders. Grubb even added that he was “super happy” with Simpson’s performance, reinforcing Simpson’s lead in the race.

This, however, raises questions about Austin Mack’s standing. DeBoer acknowledged Mack’s work ethic and potential, saying he’s one of the hardest workers on the team and possesses significant arm talent. DeBoer expressed confidence in Mack’s development over the summer, noting that Mack, along with Simpson and Russell, would have a healthy and competitive offseason. However, Mack’s inconsistencies have been a concern.

During the spring game, Mack struggled—throwing multiple interceptions, including ones picked off by linebacker Abduall Sanders Jr., and displaying accuracy issues during 7-on-7 drills. In contrast, Simpson took most of the first-team reps and was the only quarterback who didn’t throw an interception. While Mack and Russell each threw picks, Simpson’s clean game set him apart.

Simpson’s performance statistics further support his case. He threw for 167 yards without a touchdown but avoided turnovers—an essential factor for any starting quarterback. Mack finished with 39 yards and a touchdown but failed to protect the football. According to Grubb, Mack has made progress in refining the finer details of the game, but Simpson demonstrated a stronger command of the offense.

Despite Simpson’s edge, the battle for starting quarterback is still ongoing. DeBoer emphasized the importance of summer development, making it clear that the final decision will depend on how the quarterbacks improve in the coming months. “All three of them just keep pushing,” he said, indicating that the team is still evaluating its options.

Meanwhile, there’s another important development regarding star wide receiver Ryan Williams. He did not participate in Alabama’s spring game due to minor injuries. DeBoer explained that while Williams was dressed and ready, the coaching staff chose to be cautious and avoid aggravating any existing issues. The decision to hold him out was purely precautionary.

Despite his absence, DeBoer is optimistic about Williams’ future. The young receiver had an impressive freshman season, recording 48 catches for 865 yards and eight touchdowns. DeBoer praised Williams’ progression and said he’s taking crucial steps in his development from year one to year two. He also highlighted Williams’ versatility, mentioning plans to use him both inside and outside the receiver positions. DeBoer emphasized the importance of getting the ball into Williams’ hands, given his ability to make explosive plays.

With major decisions looming and key players developing, Alabama’s football team appears to be positioning itself for a strong comeback season. While Ty Simpson currently leads the quarterback race, the final answer will likely come down to summer performance and continued competition within the squad.
