Daniel Farke blasts referee for controversial moment involving Ao Tanaka during Leeds United’s win against Swansea

Leeds United achieved their ninth win of the Championship season on Sunday, climbing to the top of the table. However, their victory against a spirited Swansea City side was far from straightforward, as the home team pushed Leeds to their limits in a thrilling encounter.

Daniel Farke’s side faced a challenge unlike many others they’ve encountered this season. Swansea’s style of play, focused on maintaining possession and pressing forward, contrasted sharply with the low-block defensive strategies typically employed by teams against Leeds. This open, attacking approach allowed Swansea to score three goals but also created gaps that Leeds exploited effectively.

Leeds capitalized on these opportunities, scoring four goals in a game for the first time this season. Wilfried Gnonto’s late winner secured the vital three points for Leeds in a match that remained fiercely contested until the final moments.

The match also drew attention to some controversial refereeing decisions by Dean Whitestone, whose performance was questioned by Farke. One key incident involved a free-kick awarded to Swansea, leading to their first goal. Whitestone penalized Ao Tanaka for a tackle on Swansea’s Ronald, despite Tanaka appearing to cleanly block the ball. Farke expressed his frustration, stating that the decision was unfair and contributed to an avoidable goal.

Leeds’ history with Whitestone as a referee has been largely unfavorable. Prior to this match, Leeds had won only two of the ten games officiated by him. Notably, one of these victories came earlier this season in a 1-0 win over Leicester City. However, Leeds also suffered a 1-0 loss to Sunderland and a goalless draw against Sheffield Wednesday under Whitestone’s officiating.
