Patrick Mouratoglou has shared his thoughts on the rising influence of Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz in men’s tennis, suggesting they are ushering in a new era as the sport moves on from the dominance of the “Big 3″—Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic.
Sinner and Alcaraz made headlines in 2024 by sharing the four Grand Slam titles between them. Sinner, currently ranked world No. 1, won both the Australian Open and US Open, marking the first major titles of his career. Alcaraz, on the other hand, captured his third and fourth Grand Slam titles by winning the French Open and successfully defending his Wimbledon title.
Former world No. 1 Mats Wilander has noted that this new “Big 2” may be playing at a level surpassing that of Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic. World No. 6 Taylor Fritz reinforced this view after competing against both players, highlighting their exceptional defensive skills and powerful shots. Fritz noted that when in full motion, both Sinner and Alcaraz hit the ball with remarkable speed, making it challenging for opponents to keep up in long rallies.
In a discussion with Tennis365 ahead of the UTS Grand Final in December, Mouratoglou commented on the uniqueness of Sinner and Alcaraz’s styles, stating it’s difficult to categorize them alongside the legendary trio. He praised Alcaraz for his all-around game, noting the effectiveness of his forehand and backhand, as well as his ability to play with various techniques like slicing, drop shots, and effective net play. Mouratoglou also emphasized Alcaraz’s physical strength and exceptional serving capabilities for his height.
