Luke Getsy Returns to Green Bay Packers as Senior Offensive Assistant
Luke Getsy’s return to the Green Bay Packers has sparked mixed reactions among fans, as his performance with previous teams over the past two seasons has not been particularly strong. Despite this, head coach Matt LaFleur has brought him back to the organization, emphasizing their past working relationship rather than his recent struggles.
Getsy’s Past Experience with the Packers
Getsy is no stranger to Green Bay, having served in different roles within the team on two previous occasions. He first worked as an offensive quality control coach from 2014 to 2016 and later returned in 2019 as the quarterbacks coach. His latest role as a senior offensive assistant marks his third stint with the franchise.
Over the last two years, Getsy worked as the offensive coordinator for the Chicago Bears and later joined the Las Vegas Raiders. However, both teams failed to reach the postseason, and his tenure with the Raiders ended in disappointment as the team ultimately let him go.
LaFleur’s Confidence in Getsy
Despite the lackluster results from Getsy’s recent coaching roles, LaFleur remains confident in his abilities. Speaking at the NFC coaches’ breakfast in Florida, LaFleur explained his reasoning behind re-hiring Getsy.
“I know he’s had a rough go of it the last couple of years, but he’s someone I have a lot of respect for,” LaFleur said. “Not just as a football coach, but as a person. I think he does a great job.”
LaFleur values the time they previously spent working together and believes that Getsy can contribute significantly to the team’s success moving forward.
Getsy’s Role in Green Bay’s Recent Playoff Preparation
Getsy had already been involved with the Packers before the 2024 season concluded, assisting LaFleur as the team prepared for their playoff game against the eventual Super Bowl champions, the Philadelphia Eagles. Although Green Bay was eliminated in the Wild Card round, LaFleur believes Getsy still has much to offer due to his deep understanding of the game.
What Getsy Brings to the Packers
One of the key reasons for Getsy’s return is his football intelligence and ability to analyze the game effectively. LaFleur highlighted his strengths, stating, “He’s extremely organized, really smart, and I think he sees the game the right way. He’s brought a lot of great ideas as we’ve gone through our film cut-ups and discussed strategies as a staff. He’s going to bring a lot of value to us.”
With Getsy back in Green Bay, the Packers hope his experience and familiarity with LaFleur’s system will help improve their offensive approach as they prepare for the upcoming season.
