And although not a high-profile event in the boxing world, some simply disgraceful scenes went viral from during their showdown.

Cruz and De Jesus had been boxing in a real chess match until the second round, but the referee elected to stop the contest and hand the latter a defeat.

In incredible fashion, the challenger decided he would throw a punch at the official, in horrendous fashion which clipped his face.

It was a sucker-punch while the referee walked away, and it appeared he had let it go as he walked away.

But in sensational fashion, as De Jesus was taken back to his corner the referee turned extremely hot-headed.

He charged towards the corner and threw a huge looping overhand punch of his own towards the stunned De Jesus.

A member of the fighter’s team managed to block the bunch and prevent it from landing, but the referee was clearly incensed.

He was bundled away before choosing to clamber out of the ring and leave the fighters to their own devices.

The official stormed out, but was clearly unimpressed with the lack of security after being punched in an angry reaction from De Jesus.

It is unclear if the pair will be punished, particularly the fighter who pushed the referee to retaliation.

The scenes will not be welcomed by governing bodies in the sport, who could now be forced to use extra security measures in the ring.

It was an occurrence like rarely seen before, although referees have been known to take accidental punches in the ring when breaking up exchanges.

Recently a confused bare-knuckle boxer attacked a referee after being left dazed following some huge shots from his opponent.

An official was also famously dropped by a booming heavyweight shot during a Glory Kickboxing event, but showed real grit to carry on.
