It appears that the Pittsburgh Steelers’ patience with Aaron Rodgers is finally paying off. Earlier this week, reports emerged that the Minnesota Vikings were no longer pursuing Rodgers, which seemingly led the four-time NFL MVP to reconsider his options. While Rodgers had shown interest in joining the Vikings, he now appears to be turning his focus toward the team that had been interested in him from the beginning of free agency—the Steelers.
Rodgers Visits Pittsburgh Steelers Facility
According to Pittsburgh Post-Gazette writer Gerry Dulac, Rodgers was spotted at the Steelers’ facility, a sign that a potential deal could be in the works. “Aaron Rodgers is at the Steelers facility today, an indication a deal with the team could be forthcoming, per sources,” Dulac reported.
However, despite his visit, Rodgers is still far from finalizing a contract. Dulac added that while Rodgers met with team owner Art Rooney II, head coach Mike Tomlin, and general manager Omar Khan, there is no guarantee that a commitment will be made today, if at all.
Still, the fact that Rodgers is engaging in discussions with Pittsburgh’s leadership signals that a potential agreement could be on the horizon. If a deal materializes, it would mark one of the biggest free-agent acquisitions in Steelers history.
A Hall of Fame Resume, But Is Rodgers Still Elite?
Rodgers’ career credentials are undeniable. With 20 seasons in the NFL, four MVP awards, 10 Pro Bowl appearances, a Super Bowl title, over 60,000 passing yards, and 503 touchdown passes, he is a surefire Hall of Famer. But his recent stint with the New York Jets raises questions about how much he has left in the tank.
In the 2024 season, Rodgers started all 17 games for the Jets but managed only five wins. Statistically, he remained productive, throwing for 3,897 yards and 28 touchdowns at age 40. However, the Jets’ lackluster results may concern Pittsburgh, a franchise with a strong tradition of winning.
Tomlin, who has never had a losing season in his tenure, must decide whether Rodgers is a risk worth taking. The Steelers have other quarterback options, including Mason Rudolph, but neither he nor the rest of the QB room offers a clear path to contention.
Should Pittsburgh Take the Gamble?
Signing Rodgers would come with risks. At 41 years old, his durability is a concern, and his recent track record in New York does not guarantee success. However, his experience and talent could be the missing piece for a Steelers team looking to return to Super Bowl contention.
If Pittsburgh believes Rodgers can provide the stability and leadership they need under center, then this deal could be a game-changer. But if the concerns about age and consistency outweigh the potential upside, the Steelers might hesitate to make a final commitment.
The coming days will be crucial in determining whether Rodgers will don the black and gold or if Pittsburgh will ultimately pass on the opportunity.
