If Leeds United manage to secure promotion back to the Premier League, the current squad under Daniel Farke would instantly be regarded as heroes. The club has endured numerous painful near-misses in their attempts to escape the Championship, with last season being another disappointment despite standout performances from Crysencio Summerville and Georginio Rutter.
Farke is not the first manager to experience such setbacks. Even Marcelo Bielsa, one of the most beloved figures in the club’s recent history, initially failed in his first promotion attempt. The 2018/19 season saw Leeds fall short in the playoffs, with Derby County, led by Frank Lampard, ending their dreams. However, Bielsa eventually guided the team to promotion the following year, with key contributions from players such as Pablo Hernandez.
Pablo Hernandez’s Legacy at Leeds
Among the many modern-day greats associated with the club, Hernandez holds a special place. He first joined Leeds on loan in 2016 before securing a permanent transfer. His technical ability and leadership proved invaluable, particularly under Bielsa. Over 175 appearances, he registered 36 goals and 41 assists, playing a crucial role in Leeds’ Championship title-winning campaign in 2019/20.
Bielsa once described him as a “complete player from every point of view,” emphasizing his intelligence and ability to influence games. Hernandez’s consistent excellence made him a fan favorite and set a high standard for attacking midfielders at the club. Now, a current Leeds loanee is showing signs of replicating that impact.
Leeds’ Potential Successor to Hernandez
Hernandez arrived at Leeds as a relatively unheralded player but left a lasting legacy. Similarly, Manor Solomon, currently on loan from Tottenham Hotspur, is making a significant impression in the Championship. Playing primarily as a left winger, though capable of operating on the right or centrally, Solomon has become a crucial part of Farke’s attacking setup.
So far, he has contributed seven goals and eight assists in 33 appearances, leading to speculation about whether Leeds will attempt to sign him permanently. Reports suggest that securing his services could cost around £20 million, but competition from Premier League side Everton may complicate matters.
While Solomon’s total goal contributions this season are still below Hernandez’s peak performance in 2019/20, his influence is growing. Former Leeds manager Neil Redfearn has even described him as “unplayable” at times. If Leeds can secure promotion and keep him at Elland Road, he could carve out a legacy similar to Hernandez’s.
Solomon’s Future at Leeds
Solomon may struggle to secure regular playing time at Tottenham if he returns at the end of his loan spell. Leeds fans have a history of embracing skillful and entertaining players, and Solomon’s performances have endeared him to supporters. If he remains at the club beyond this season, he could become one of the standout figures in their modern history, much like Hernandez did during Bielsa’s reign.
