John Tavares Predicted to Sign $10 Million Extension With Maple Leafs

John Tavares Likely to Re-Sign With Toronto Maple Leafs Despite Free Agency Status

Toronto Maple Leafs star forward John Tavares is set to become a free agent on July 1, but reports strongly suggest he will remain with the team.

A user prediction on Puckpedia speculated that the Maple Leafs could offer Tavares a two-year, $10 million contract extension. The deal would represent a pay cut from his current salary but remains a reasonable figure at $5 million per season. Given his performance and history with the team, such a contract seems fair for both parties.

Tavares is currently in the final season of a seven-year, $77 million contract with Toronto. He has had an impressive year, which could increase his market value. However, if he wants to stay with the Maple Leafs, he may need to accept a discounted salary.

Born in Toronto, Tavares has played 59 games this season, tallying 27 goals and 29 assists for 56 points. A former first-overall pick in the 2009 NHL Draft, he has been named to six All-Star teams.

Tavares Expresses Desire to Stay With the Maple Leafs

Tavares left the New York Islanders to sign with Toronto, fulfilling a lifelong dream of playing for his hometown team. Now, as his contract nears its expiration, he has made it clear that he hopes to sign an extension and continue his career with the Maple Leafs.

“I certainly would love to get it done,” Tavares stated. “Obviously, the club has a lot going on. It’s not just about me. I know management will do what they have to do at that time of year. If we have the opportunity to get it done, I’d love to do that. If not, when that time comes, we’ll get there. I just look forward to continuing my journey here as a Leaf — and obviously, I want it to continue past this season.”

While he has been open to discussing a new contract, negotiations have not been a primary focus during the season, as his attention has been on helping the team succeed.

“I just try to go about my business, control what I can control, and do what I can to help this team,” Tavares said. “Right now, our focus is on getting as many wins as possible, securing a playoff spot, and making a deep run. When the time comes to talk about my contract, I’ll be ready for that. But for now, I’m just trying to impact the team as best I can.”

Maple Leafs Coach Praises Tavares’ Professionalism

Tavares, a former Maple Leafs captain, has been a key leader for the team both on and off the ice. Despite entering a contract year, his approach has remained steady and focused.

Head coach Craig Berube has been particularly impressed with Tavares’ consistency and work ethic.

“He’s a pro. He just does his thing every day. He comes to work, follows his routine, and has played extremely well for us,” Berube said. “I don’t think he thinks about his contract situation at all, to be honest with you. I haven’t noticed any signs of that affecting him.”

As the season progresses, Tavares and the Maple Leafs continue their push toward the playoffs. The team currently holds a 39-24-3 record, sitting third in the Atlantic Division.
