Padres May Not Wait Long to Promote Ethan Salas, Leo De Vries to Majors

The San Diego Padres have made several promising developments this spring, giving fans renewed optimism for the team’s future. Two standout prospects in their farm system—shortstop Leodalis De Vries and catcher Ethan Salas—have impressed during Cactus League play, generating excitement among supporters.

De Vries had a notable season in Single-A last year, posting a slash line of .237/.361/.441 and an OPS of .802. Over 75 games, he recorded 11 home runs and 38 RBIs, demonstrating his potential as an offensive contributor. His performance has earned him a significant placement in the Padres’ clubhouse during his first major league camp this spring.

His locker was positioned between veteran players Jason Heyward and Xander Bogaerts, a deliberate move by the organization. A similar approach was taken in 2019 when a young Fernando Tatis Jr. was placed near Manny Machado. That strategic placement allowed Tatis to learn from experienced players early on, contributing to his rapid rise to superstardom. The Padres appear to be using the same mentorship strategy with De Vries, ensuring that he benefits from the leadership and knowledge of established professionals.

Manager Mike Shildt acknowledged the importance of having two 18-year-olds at the top of the organization’s prospect list and suggested that their major league debuts might not be as far off as some expect. He addressed the idea that youth should not be used as an excuse for delaying development, emphasizing the need to take advantage of every opportunity available.

Shildt explained that while age is often a point of discussion, players develop through their own experiences and by learning from others. He cautioned against assuming that young players will naturally progress over time without being challenged, noting that time passes quickly, and growth must be intentional.

Both Salas and De Vries will continue refining their skills in preparation for the major leagues. While their arrival at Petco Park is not set in stone, their current trajectory suggests they could make an impact sooner rather than later.

Shildt stressed that talented players who have long, successful careers often make their major league debuts at an early age. The Padres are hopeful that these two prospects will follow a similar path, with the right mentorship and development guiding them toward success.
