Why did former Alabama football linebacker transfer to Clemson? What Jeremiah Alexander said

Former Alabama linebacker Jeremiah Alexander has transferred to Clemson, seeking increased playing time and new opportunities. A former five-star recruit, Alexander spent three seasons with the Crimson Tide but saw limited action, totaling 11 tackles across 28 games and playing just 57 defensive snaps, according to Pro Football Focus.

Upon arriving at Clemson, head coach Dabo Swinney acknowledged that Alexander had initially chosen Alabama over the Tigers, telling him that “God doesn’t make mistakes” and emphasizing that his path had ultimately led him to Clemson for a reason. Reflecting on his time at Alabama, Alexander expressed gratitude for the experience, stating that it shaped him into the person he is today. However, entering the transfer portal gave him a chance to seek a fresh start, and Clemson’s limited use of the portal—bringing in only three transfers that year—made him appreciate the opportunity even more.

Alexander played 21 snaps for Alabama in the ReliaQuest Bowl against Michigan, unaware at the time that he would soon enter the portal. With two years of eligibility remaining, he wanted to maximize his chances of playing regularly on Saturdays and demonstrating his abilities on the field.

A major influence in his decision was defensive lineman Peter Woods, who had played alongside Alexander at Thompson High School in Alabaster. When Alexander entered the portal, Woods immediately reached out via FaceTime, encouraging him to join Clemson. Their long-standing connection, dating back to their early football days in youth leagues and high school, made the transition to Clemson feel natural for Alexander.

Beyond his relationship with Woods, Alexander believed Clemson was the best place for his personal and athletic development. He felt confident that he would fit well within the locker room culture and saw the program as an environment where he could grow both as a player and as a person.
