Kyle McCord Reflects on Ohio State’s National Championship and His Own Journey at Syracuse
Former Ohio State quarterback Kyle McCord didn’t hold back when discussing the Buckeyes’ 2024 national championship season. While Ryan Day and company secured Ohio State’s ninth national title, McCord was making headlines of his own, enjoying a standout season with Syracuse. Meanwhile, Will Howard, Ohio State’s new starting quarterback, delivered a phenomenal playoff run, elevating the Buckeyes’ offense when it mattered most.
McCord, who transferred after the 2023 season, has occasionally hinted at some frustrations with how his time in Columbus ended. However, he took the high road when reflecting on Ohio State’s success:
“It was awesome. Those are my guys, so seeing them accomplish that goal was sweet. I had a great year, they had a great year — it was just cool to see everybody win. After spending three years pouring everything into that program, it wasn’t easy to leave, but I think it worked out for both sides in the end.”
The split seems to have benefited both parties. McCord, who threw for 24 touchdowns and 6 interceptions in his lone season as Ohio State’s starter, has developed into a projected Day 2 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft after his success at Syracuse. Meanwhile, Ohio State looks primed to compete for another title in 2025-26.
Though some Ohio State fans might have taken issue with McCord’s comments about the Michigan rivalry, the reality is clear — both McCord and Ohio State are thriving apart. McCord has a legitimate shot at an NFL starting job, and the Buckeyes are national contenders once again. Sometimes, a fresh start works for everyone.
