$130M College Football Coach Visits 24 Recruits in Single Week to Rebuild His Falling Program

Kirby Smart’s Relentless Recruiting Blitz: Securing Georgia’s Future Amid High Expectations

In college football, perception plays a crucial role. One moment, a team is at the pinnacle of success, winning national championships and building powerhouse recruiting classes, and the next, the pressure mounts to maintain that dominance. Georgia Bulldogs head coach Kirby Smart, who signed a record-breaking 10-year, $130 million contract last May, finds himself at the center of this dynamic. Despite a challenging 2024 season that ended with an 11-3 record and a Sugar Bowl loss to Notre Dame, Smart remains unwavering in his commitment to securing Georgia’s future as a national powerhouse.

A Grueling Week of Recruiting

With the winter contact period coming to a close, Smart embarked on an intensive week-long recruiting mission, covering multiple states to visit top prospects. His aggressive approach reflects Georgia’s refusal to accept any decline in performance. Over the span of seven days, Smart visited 24 recruits, making sure to leave a lasting impression on each.

Currently ranked No. 2 nationally and within the SEC by 247Sports—trailing only Texas—Georgia boasts a formidable recruiting class. The Bulldogs have secured commitments from 34 players, including three five-stars and 23 four-stars. However, Smart’s drive for excellence means the work is never truly finished.

Targeting the Next Generation of Stars

One of the biggest priorities for Smart this past week was securing a commitment from Jackson Cantwell, a dominant offensive lineman from Nixa High School. At 6-foot-8 and 300 pounds, Cantwell is widely regarded as the No. 1 prospect in the 2026 class, making him a sought-after player among top programs. Smart personally followed up after offensive line coach Stacy Searels’ visit, reinforcing Georgia’s strong interest in the highly touted recruit.

But Cantwell wasn’t the only player on Smart’s radar. His week began with a visit to Michigan, where he checked in on four-star tight end Lincoln Keyes. Keyes, who recently committed to Georgia, was reportedly captivated by the atmosphere in Athens during the Bulldogs’ game against Tennessee.

Smart also placed a strong emphasis on the offensive line, making trips to South Carolina to visit highly regarded prospects Malcolm Gaston and Desmond Green. Green, in particular, has been vocal about his growing interest in Georgia, crediting Smart’s direct involvement in his recruitment as a major factor in his decision-making process.

The Quarterback Question

Despite Georgia’s impressive recruiting haul, one lingering concern remains: securing an elite quarterback. The Bulldogs currently have a commitment from four-star quarterback Ryan Montgomery, a 6-foot-3, 215-pound prospect from Findlay, Ohio. While highly rated, Montgomery lacks experience at the collegiate level, raising questions about Georgia’s long-term strategy at the position. With National Signing Day approaching on February 5, securing a top-tier quarterback remains a pressing issue.

Joel Klatt’s Perspective: Georgia’s Future Remains Bright

Despite concerns about Georgia’s trajectory, FOX Sports analyst Joel Klatt remains confident in Smart’s ability to keep the Bulldogs among the nation’s elite. In his “way-too-early” Top 10 rankings for 2025, Klatt placed Georgia at No. 4, emphasizing the program’s depth and ability to reload.

“Georgia, and what they’ve done from a roster-building standpoint, is just flat-out impressive,” Klatt stated. “That’s why they’ll continue to be right here at No. 4. I felt like it was just a down year for Georgia, and yet they navigated the hardest schedule in the country, won the SEC, and were sitting there in the College Football Playoff quarterfinals with a backup quarterback. So, if we think Georgia is going anywhere, that this is some sort of a trend in the wrong direction, I think that we would all be sorely mistaken. Kirby Smart is far too driven.”

Even in what was considered a down year by Georgia’s high standards, the Bulldogs navigated a brutal schedule, secured an SEC Championship, and remained a playoff contender. The relentless pursuit of elite talent remains the cornerstone of Smart’s philosophy, ensuring that Georgia remains in the national championship conversation for years to come.
