Major Consequences Await Sherrone Moore With 8-Figure Blow in Michigan’s NCAA Sign-Stealing Fallout

The Michigan Wolverines are once again at the center of the sign-stealing controversy that first emerged in November 2023. Back then, head coach Jim Harbaugh and his staff faced allegations of in-person scouting and recording opponents’ signals, a violation of NCAA rules. Despite the scandal, Michigan went on to win the national championship. Harbaugh has since moved to the NFL, and offensive coordinator Sherrone Moore has taken over as head coach. However, the controversy has resurfaced, with reports suggesting Moore deleted WhatsApp messages linked to the allegations.

Clayton Sayfie and Anthony Broome, hosts of The Wolverine: Michigan podcast, believe a suspension for Moore is a real possibility. Sayfie noted that Michigan is pushing back against the allegations, arguing the deleted messages were not an attempt to cover up wrongdoing but were erased in frustration. Despite this, some analysts predict Michigan could face a significant fine, potentially between $10 million and $15 million, along with scholarship reductions.

The accusations stem from former Michigan staffer Connor Stalions, who allegedly scouted opponents in person and shared information with Moore. Yahoo Sports uncovered messages from August 2022 in which Stalions reportedly discussed a “juicy report” on Colorado State with Moore, just before Michigan played them. Additional messages referenced Michigan State’s predictable signals.

While Stalions has since been dismissed, Michigan maintains that the allegations against Moore lack sufficient evidence. The school argues that the case should be treated as a lesser Level II infraction rather than a severe Level I violation. As the investigation continues, it remains to be seen whether Moore will face any formal punishment.
