Former Flying Fijians halfback Nikola Matawalu is setting his sights on a historic coaching career, aspiring to become the first foreigner to coach the backline for the British & Irish Lions. Currently plying his trade with Caerphilly RFC in the WRU Division Two East Central, Matawalu is eager to begin his coaching journey in Wales, focusing on the development of young players.
With experience at Glasgow Warriors, Bath, and Exeter, Matawalu has built strong relationships and a reputation for nurturing talent. He is passionate about guiding young athletes, believing that fostering early connections will be key to his coaching success. “I want to mold these boys from a young age. When I reach the top, I want to still know them, build that same connection,” he explained.
Matawalu has also received encouragement from prominent rugby figures, including former Lions and current Scotland coach Gregor Townsend, who has been in regular contact to offer guidance and support. This mentorship highlights Matawalu’s potential and underscores his ambitions.
Starting in Wales could be a pivotal step in Matawalu’s journey toward a groundbreaking role with the British & Irish Lions, as he continues to blend his dynamic playing experience with his passion for coaching.
