On Friday night, a BBC analyst was astounded by a “fabulous” Leeds player against Sheffield Wednesday.

 

After Leeds United defeated Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough on Friday night to take a commanding lead in the Championship promotion race, Jon Newsome responded to Illan Meslier’s performance.

 

This season, Illan Meslier has another perfect game. This season, Meslier has mostly served as just another center defender who may be passed to. However, he had to produce a few clutch saves in the Owls game.

 

After a corner from the home team, Wednesday had a great opportunity to grab the lead after eighteen minutes when Anthony Musaba was left one on one a few yards out.

The Frenchman established himself by shutting down Musaba. The Wednesday player’s effort struck Meslier’s knee and went past the far post, rewarding him.

Late in the game, Meslier would have a wobbly moment when he mishandled a long-range shot and required Ethan Ampadu to clear it off the goalline.

 

However, in an interview with BBC Radio Leeds, Jon Newsome stated that Meslier truly came up big in the first half.

 

“I thought Sheffield Wednesday had the best chance of the game in the first half, and they made a fantastic save.” Once more, he got just enough on it by his thigh to divert it wide before coming out and making himself huge,” he remarked.

 

Then, as I mentioned before, the wild attempt from outside the box in the second half may have merely ricocheted a little. He simply didn’t appear to handle the first one well, and it seemed to catch him off guard a little bit. Got by with the second one just well. However, Ampadu was present once more to interpret the game.

 

The Frenchman deserved that lucky break after making several outstanding saves this season.

There remains a degree of uncertainty over Meslier’s level of skill. In his first full season with the team, he was outstanding and performed at a Premier League caliber. However, Meslier was far from excellent enough in the previous season, as were many others. And Sam Allardyce ultimately let him go.

 

Except for receiving a red card against Preston North End, he has performed admirably for the team this season. Additionally, Meslier has made some incredible saves along the way. Given that the pitch was obviously challenging to play on in the second half, perhaps he deserved that bit of luck.
