Cowboys Legend Emmitt Smith Erupts Against Roger Goodell’s 18-Game NFL Season Plans

When NFL legend Emmitt Smith speaks, people listen — and he didn’t hold back about the league’s proposed 18-game season.

Smith criticized the idea, questioning how adding another game aligns with the NFL’s claims about prioritizing player safety. He argued that an extra game would only increase the risk of head trauma and injuries, saying the real reason behind the push is money, not safety. According to him, players didn’t even want the 17-game schedule, let alone an 18th.

The proposal would require approval from the NFL Players Association (NFLPA), which has already voiced strong opposition. Interim executive director David White said players have “no appetite” for an 18th game due to health concerns, stressing that no change will happen without formal negotiations and player consent.

Recent injuries have added fuel to the debate. Stars like Patrick Mahomes and Micah Parsons suffered season-ending ACL tears, and league-wide concussions reportedly increased from 129 in 2024 to 168 in 2025. Critics argue that another regular-season game would only increase physical risks.

Commissioner Roger Goodell said there have been no formal discussions yet and that any change would require careful talks with the union. He noted that factors like roster size, a potential second bye week, and player safety would need consideration.

Meanwhile, Robert Kraft, owner of the New England Patriots, has expressed support for an 18-game season, suggesting it could replace a preseason game and help grow the league, possibly with more international matchups.

For now, the 18-game season remains uncertain. With Smith publicly backing the players’ concerns, the debate between league growth and player safety is far from settled.
