Phil Mickelson may have missed the cut at Augusta National this year after finishing 5-over-par, but he’s still thriving outside of major tournaments. The LIV golfer recently took part in a casual yet highly entertaining golf match alongside popular content creator Grant Horvat. In a video shared on Horvat’s YouTube channel, Mickelson joined forces with Horvat to face off against professional golfer Jon Rahm and NFL quarterback Josh Allen in a 2v2 game.
The match took place at La Jolla Country Club in San Diego, California, and was played in a best-ball format—each team using the better of their two shots for every hole. The atmosphere was competitive but relaxed, with a mix of serious shot-making and playful banter throughout. One of the highlights came during a discussion about how to handle a particularly tricky shot on a green with a false front, requiring precise spin control to avoid the ball rolling away.

Mickelson and Horvat teed off first, with Horvat placing his shot just two feet from the hole. Mickelson followed with a similarly precise effort, earning praise from Rahm and Allen, who were impressed by his accuracy. When it was their turn, Allen stepped up and delivered a shot just four feet from the hole. Mickelson, in typical dry humor, jokingly remarked, “F–k Josh Allen. He’s the nicest guy, and he does this sh-t.” After Rahm hit his shot, Mickelson playfully added, “Can I say, ‘F–k Jon Rahm, too?’” The friendly trash talk added to the entertainment value of the match.
Both Rahm and Allen demonstrated strong control and finesse, showcasing their skills beyond their primary sports. Allen, in particular, impressed Mickelson with his abilities, though their friendly rivalry is nothing new. The bond between Allen and Rahm is also notable, built on shared experiences and a mutual love for golf.
Allen, who has played golf casually since his youth in California, has grown more involved with the sport as his football career progressed. He has participated in charity events and spent time golfing with pros like Mickelson. Their connection even showed up during Halloween in 2021, when Allen dressed as Mickelson, complete with a golf shirt, visor, and signature thumbs-up.
That same year, Mickelson spoke with Allen and the Buffalo Bills team at the start of their season, offering insight into staying mentally balanced. Allen noted how valuable it was to hear from a legendary golfer that frustration hampers performance—a sentiment that resonated with him and helped guide his mindset. That same week, Allen led the Bills to a victory against the Dolphins.
Their mutual respect continues off the course, too. When Allen recently secured a six-year, $330 million contract extension with the Bills, Mickelson congratulated him publicly, praising the recognition and respect Allen has earned in the NFL. Their friendship seems to transcend both golf and football, though fans would surely love to see more matchups like this in the future.
