Manchester United head coach Rúben Amorim has confirmed that André Onana will return as the starting goalkeeper for the crucial UEFA Europa League quarter-final second leg against Lyon at Old Trafford .

Onana was previously benched for United’s 4-1 Premier League defeat to Newcastle, following criticism for his performance in the first leg against Lyon, where his errors contributed to a 2-2 draw .


Amorim defended his decision, emphasizing the importance of mental recovery and expressing full trust in Onana . He stated, “When I made that decision in the last week, I talked with Andre and that is important for me to explain what I am thinking. I have the conversation (with my coaches) but it is my decision in the end. I think Andre deserves to return to the competition” .

 

The match against Lyon is pivotal for United, as the Europa League represents their only remaining path to European qualification . Amorim acknowledged the pressure, noting that every position on the team, including the goalkeeper, will be evaluated over the summer as part of broader efforts to improve the squad .

 

In addition to the goalkeeper decision, Amorim confirmed that forward Joshua Zirkzee is out for the remainder of the season due to a hamstring injury sustained in the match against Newcastle .
