In a devastating turn of events, reigning MotoGP World Champion Jorge Martín Almoguera suffered a violent crash during the Qatar Grand Prix on April 13, 2025, just as he was making his long-awaited season debut for Aprilia Racing. The incident occurred on lap 14 at Turn 11 of the Lusail International Circuit, marking a nightmarish start to Martín’s 2025 campaign.

Martín, who had already missed the first three rounds of the season due to injuries sustained during pre-season testing, was making a heroic return to the grid. However, his comeback was abruptly halted when he lost control mid-race and was thrown violently from his bike.

Trackside medics rushed to his aid and he was immediately transported to the medical center, and later transferred to Hamad General Hospital in Doha. Initial scans revealed a worsening pneumothorax, commonly known as a collapsed lung, requiring immediate drainage. Upon further evaluation, doctors confirmed multiple rib fractures — eight breaks on the posterior arches of the right side (1st to 8th ribs) and three more on the lateral arches (7th to 9th ribs).

Martín remains hospitalized and under close observation, with no definitive timeline set for his recovery or return to racing. Aprilia Racing issued a statement of support, with CEO Massimo Rivola saying:

> “Performance moves to the back burner today and our thoughts are with Jorge at this difficult period. We stand with him and are committed to supporting his full recovery.”

The crash also dealt a heavy blow to Aprilia’s championship hopes. The next race on the calendar, the Spanish Grand Prix in Jerez, is just two weeks away, making it highly unlikely Martín will be fit to participate.

Meanwhile, the Qatar GP saw Marc Márquez of Ducati clinch victory, extending his championship lead to 18 points over his brother Álex Márquez.

As fans and teams await further updates, the MotoGP community has rallied around Martín with messages of encouragement, hoping the champion makes a strong and safe return to the track.
