Verstappen’s Cautious Forecast for Red Bull’s F1 2025 Title Hopes
Max Verstappen has issued a warning about Red Bull’s chances in the 2025 Formula 1 title race, stating they may struggle to close the gap to McLaren unless significant improvements are made to their car. Despite his victory in Japan, Verstappen believes Red Bull faces challenges in the upcoming season.
Strong Win in Japan, but Concerns Remain
Coming off an impressive win at the Japanese Grand Prix on April 6, where Verstappen outpaced McLaren’s Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, the Dutch driver secured his first victory since December 2024. This win lifted him to second in the championship, just one point behind Norris.

Red Bull’s Challenges in Bahrain
Looking ahead to the F1 2025 Bahrain Grand Prix, Verstappen sees potential difficulties for Red Bull. The Bahrain circuit presents a stark contrast to Suzuka, with longer straights, more DRS zones, and greater tire degradation, all of which could favor McLaren.
McLaren’s cars, particularly Norris and Piastri, are expected to perform better as race stints progress, which could put Verstappen and Red Bull at a disadvantage. The key challenge for Red Bull will be dealing with tire wear, as well as the ability to navigate the circuit’s dirty air, especially if Verstappen manages to overtake. McLaren may also benefit from their strong tire management.
Bahrain Could See Upsets
While Red Bull’s current form makes them the favorites, the Bahrain GP could still throw up surprises. Verstappen and Red Bull will need to be wary of strategic moves from their competitors. In 2021, Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes managed to outsmart Verstappen and Red Bull with clever strategy, securing the win despite having a slower car.
In short, Verstappen remains optimistic but acknowledges that Red Bull will need more performance if they want to secure a strong title challenge against McLaren.
