Texas men’s basketball is undergoing a notable transformation under new head coach Sean Miller, who has made another significant move by hiring a familiar face. On April 11, it was reported that Miller has added Kenya Hunter to his coaching staff. Hunter, who previously worked with Miller during his first stint at Xavier, was most recently part of Mike Woodson’s staff at Indiana for the 2024-25 season.
This hiring completes Miller’s new staff in Austin. The update was first shared by Jeff Goodman of the Field of 68, confirming Hunter’s addition to the Texas program.
Kenya Hunter brings over 20 years of coaching experience at the Division I level. Before his time with the Hoosiers, he served two seasons under Dan Hurley at UConn. His coaching journey also includes time with Nebraska and Georgetown, and he was a key part of Xavier’s success from 2004 to 2007, helping guide the team to consecutive 20-win seasons and a 2007 NCAA Tournament appearance.
In addition to building his staff, Miller has been active in the transfer portal, securing three new additions to the Longhorns. Former Xavier standout Dylan Swain followed him to Texas, joined by ex-Purdue forward Camden Heide and former Florida Atlantic center Matas Vokietaitis. All three incoming players are considered four-star transfers by major recruiting platforms like 247Sports and On3.
Despite the positive momentum, Miller did lose one player to the portal—Devon Pryor, who transferred to Oregon to play for Dana Altman. Additionally, star freshman Tre Johnson declared for the 2025 NBA Draft.
However, Miller has managed to retain key contributors for the upcoming season. Jordan Pope, Chendall Weaver, and Tramon Mark have all confirmed they will stay with the Longhorns. As Texas prepares for its second year in the SEC and its first under Miller’s leadership, the team appears to be on solid footingfooting.
