Not So Fast: Departed Cowboys Star Eyeing Surprise Return

Eric Kendricks Still a Possible Fit for Cowboys Return

As the Dallas Cowboys shift focus toward the 2025 NFL Draft, many of their free agents have already moved on to new teams. Key names like DeMarcus Lawrence have signed with the Seattle Seahawks, while Jourdan Lewis and Chuma Edoga have joined the Jacksonville Jaguars. Other former Cowboys, such as wide receiver Brandin Cooks and running back Rico Dowdle, are now with the New Orleans Saints and Carolina Panthers, respectively.

Despite the departures, not every door has closed on potential reunions. One player, in particular, remains unsigned — and could still find his way back to Dallas.

Linebacker Eric Kendricks is one such free agent. The 33-year-old veteran joined the Cowboys last year, reuniting with his former coach Mike Zimmer from their time together with the Minnesota Vikings. While some fans were skeptical of Kendricks’ signing — especially given the team’s promise to go “all in” and instead opting for short-term deals with older players — Kendricks quickly proved his worth.

Throughout the 2024 season, Kendricks led the team in total tackles with 138, including 71 solo tackles. He also contributed three pass deflections, three sacks, three forced fumbles, and two interceptions over 15 games and 920 defensive snaps.

His strong season didn’t go unnoticed by analysts. According to Pro Football Focus, Kendricks ranked highly among linebackers — finishing 33rd in run defense (78.3), 12th in pass rush (78.5), and 27th overall (75.2).

Now, even with Mike Zimmer no longer in Dallas, a return isn’t out of the question. The Cowboys’ new defensive coordinator, Matt Eberflus, and linebackers coach Dave Borgonzi both have the background to effectively utilize Kendricks’ skillset.

Financially, bringing Kendricks back is a viable option. His projected annual market value stands at $6.8 million — a figure well within reach given the Cowboys still have over $38.4 million in available cap space, the sixth most in the league.

Ultimately, if Kendricks is open to returning, Dallas should seriously consider it. His veteran leadership, consistent production, and understanding of defensive schemes could be even more impactful with another offseason in the Cowboys system.
