Red Sox Could Drop $90 Million Hammer Amid Rafael Devers Situation as Insider Drops Bold Question

The Boston Red Sox currently face a “glamorous problem” that many teams would love to have: a farm system overflowing with talent, creating a logjam in their roster. One player caught in this situation is Masataka Yoshida, the Japanese outfielder brought in to be a key hitter in the middle of the lineup. However, after a promising rookie season, Yoshida has struggled to maintain his performance, and a recent left thumb injury has sidelined him, further complicating his situation.

Yoshida’s five-year, $90 million deal, once seen as a solid investment, now appears to be a potential burden, especially with Rafael Devers returning to the designated hitter (DH) role and Alex Bregman occupying third base. The question arises: where does Yoshida fit within the lineup? The team’s focus is shifting toward younger, versatile players, with new faces like Kristian Campbell, David Hamilton, and top prospect Roman Anthony gaining more opportunities. The outfield is crowded with players like Jarren Duran and Wilyer Abreu, making Yoshida’s position even more uncertain.

Ken Rosenthal recently highlighted the dilemma, suggesting that the Red Sox might have to make a tough decision on Yoshida’s future. While a trade could be the answer, finding a suitable trade partner has proven difficult, and even a lesser return might not be enough to move him. However, with injuries and unexpected developments, the team might still opt to keep him, as anything can happen in the MLB.

Yoshida is still recovering from right labrum surgery and has not been cleared for a rehab assignment yet. Red Sox manager Alex Cora noted that Yoshida’s return will depend on his defensive readiness, as his lack of defensive power makes his recovery even more critical. Despite setbacks, Yoshida showed flashes of his potential during spring training, hitting .286 in 2023 and proving himself as a two-time Pacific League batting champion in Japan. However, the Red Sox’s shifting strategy and lineup now complicate his return to prominence.

For now, Yoshida’s future remains uncertain, as both he and the Red Sox are in a state of limbo. The team’s strategy and player developments will ultimately determine whether Yoshida will stay or be traded.
