NFL Rumors: Sean McDermott to Draft 81 Tackle CB as Bills HC Clears Stance on Injured Defensive Powerhouse

The Buffalo Bills are fully focused on making a serious push this season, and every move they make is crucial. Head coach Sean McDermott is aware that there are still some weaknesses in the roster, with cornerback being a notable concern.

Reports highlight that the Bills have only about $6 million left in salary cap space, meaning they’ll likely need to look for affordable options in free agency. One major unresolved situation is the future of Rasul Douglas, who has not yet been re-signed. With time running out, the team is looking at alternatives.

One such option is Virginia Tech’s Dorian Strong, who has been added to the Bills’ pre-draft visit list. Since 2020, Strong has made 81 solo tackles. Analysts describe him as instinctive, quick on his feet, and a solid tackler. While he’s projected to be selected later in the draft, possibly on day three, there’s interest in what he could bring to the team.

Strong stands out in both man and zone coverage. In man-to-man, he plays physically, disrupting receivers’ timing right off the line. He maintains tight coverage and fights for the ball aggressively at the point of the catch. In zone, he’s observant, often reading quarterbacks well and jumping routes — evidenced by five interceptions over the past two seasons.

Strong is scheduled to meet with McDermott and the Bills soon, and there’s hope that he could be a fit for the team. However, he’s not the only cornerback on their radar. East Carolina’s Shavon Revel is another potential option. Despite concerns over a torn ACL he suffered last September, the Bills may still consider taking a chance on him as a CB2.

Meanwhile, expectations for the Bills are sky-high, especially with quarterback Josh Allen under immense pressure to deliver a Super Bowl win. The team has also brought in defensive end Joey Bosa during the offseason. While his injury history over the past few years has raised questions, the Bills are confident in their ability to manage him effectively.

McDermott, during the NFL Annual Meetings, hinted that they have experience handling players with injury backgrounds. He noted their past success with such cases and expressed belief in the sports science and strength staff — specifically Will Greenberg and Joe Collins — to keep players healthy and performing at their best.

Despite the concerns, the Bills handed Bosa a one-year, $12.6 million deal, betting on his game-changing ability when healthy. With all these moves and decisions looming, the team’s leadership is making it clear: they’re doing everything they can to build a winning team this season.
