More Trouble for Marcus Freeman as Injury Deepens QB Dilemma After Concerning Steve Angeli Revelation

Notre Dame, under the leadership of Marcus Freeman, still hasn’t named its starting quarterback, sparking a lot of anticipation about who will take over after Riley Leonard. Right now, Steve Angeli appears to be slightly ahead. Though his performance in the College Football Playoff semifinal against Penn State was modest—throwing just 44 yards—he led a critical field goal drive that helped seal a narrow win. Still, the big question remains: how long must Angeli wait to fully take on the role he seems destined for?

The spring football season is nearing its end, and Freeman has three serious contenders to evaluate: Steve Angeli, Kenny Minchey, and CJ Carr. Each quarterback has showcased different strengths during practice. Angeli was impressive in evading pressure, while Minchey stood out for his quick release. However, no clear winner has emerged.

Adding to the uncertainty is a growing list of injuries that have hampered progress. Offensive lineman Guerby Lambert tore his labrum and won’t return until the fall, leaving the quarterbacks working mostly behind second- and third-string lines. Other key players, including Jeremiyah Love, Gi’Bran Payne, Taebron Bennie Powell, Quentin Autry, and Cole Mullins, are also sidelined. Mullins is still recovering from a knee injury and may only be partially active late in spring.

These injuries complicate Freeman’s decision-making. With his methodical approach to selecting a quarterback, the process has slowed even further. According to analysts, it was unlikely Freeman would decide by the end of spring anyway, but the current setbacks make it nearly impossible.

Recent practices haven’t helped Angeli’s case. Despite handling pressure decently, he’s been inconsistent in ball placement. He overthrew an open Cam Williams on what could’ve been a long touchdown and missed KK Smith in the end zone by a wide margin. These misfires have raised concerns.

Meanwhile, Kenny Minchey has been gaining traction. He looked composed and accurate during the latest scrimmage and started out with the first team. Despite throwing a pick—tipped by Cole Mullins—he was generally the most effective quarterback that day.

Ultimately, Marcus Freeman holds the final say in naming Notre Dame’s next starting quarterback. The competition remains intense, and with several variables at play, fans will have to wait and see who gets the nod.
